Blog Entry #5 A Look @ Music Videos

The music video I chose is 1234 by Plain White T's.

Initial Reaction:
At the beginning of the music video, the first thing I noticed was that the whole music video is in black and white.  And as I saw the lead singer of the band (Tom Higgenson) walking around the city of Chicago by himself carrying his guitar, it made me wonder how the music video will relate to the song about love.

Analysis and Interpretation:
The video starts off by showing Tom Higgenson roaming around the city alone with his guitar and stops and sings to couples passing by at various locations.  I was smiling the whole time while I was watching the video because it made me think about the time when I really liked someone and how I felt whenever I'm with that person.  Without a doubt, this video can be related in a way to gospel values because love is a virtue that represents all of human kindness, compassion and affection.

Consideration of Cultural Context:
This music video was created because of the lead singer's girlfriend Angie, whom he has been dating for quite a long time.  It was shot in Chicago because that's where he met her.  Instead of focusing the music video on just the lead singer's girlfriend, real couples were shown on the video as well.

Expression of Aesthetic Judgement:
Overall, the music video is very well done.  The performance, storyline, lyrics and musicality work all blended well together.

Ongoing Reflection:
Even though the music was released way back in January 2009, both the song and the music video will never get old to me.  Whenever I listen to the song/watch the music video, I can't help but smile.  The music video truly proves a point that love is a wonderful thing.
